MCC's Proposed Municipal Bicycle Ordinance Passes Committee

Montalban Cycling Club's (MCC) proposed municipal Bicycle Ordinance of 2013 has been accepted, with very minor revisions, in a committee hearing held this morning.

Councilor Roger Frias, committee head for this hearing, said it will now be forwarded to the Sangguniang Bayan of Rodriguez, Rizal for approval. Councilor Arman Angeles, co-head in this hearing, also concurred.

The proposed bicycle ordinance contains the following objectives:

  • Declare as town policy that the town of Rodriguez is a "bike-friendly municipality" for health, environmental, economic and tourism reasons;
  • Set bike lanes on major roads of Rodriguez and put up signages, for the exclusive use of cycylists;
  • Create bike parking racks on government, public, and commercial areas;
  • Develop bike tourism in the town by maintaining, developing, and creating bike trails;
  • Foster cyclists' safety by encouraging use of protective gears, like helmet, bike lights, and others;
  • Create a Bicycle Promotion and Tourism Committee which will ensure this ordinance's implementation;
  • Encourage cyclists' participation through various activities; and
  • Launch an "Araw ng Siklista" activity on the 2nd Sunday of November every year in observance of Clean Air Month.
This proposed ordinance was submitted to the Sangguniang Bayan early in September, and was tabled for discussion at the Sangguniang Bayan plenary session last September 16.

MCC is crossing its fingers that this proposed ordinance will be approved by the Sangguniang Bayan within the month.

"Montalban" is the old name of the town of Rodriguez, Rizal.
